Website migration

Moving your website to a new host or server, with a plan for DNS, SSL, and the database, and a way back if something goes wrong.

Starting at $400

When a migration makes sense.

  • The hosting no longer fits

The site has outgrown its plan, or you want hosting with accounts in your name.

  • Someone else holds the account

The site runs on a host set up by a former developer or agency, and you want it under your control.

  • The server is out of date

The current host can't run the PHP version your site needs.

  • Sites in several places

Websites spread across different hosts are moving to one place. Several sites get a custom quote.

How a migration runs.

The standard migration covers one small website without complex architecture changes. Larger or more complex migrations get a custom quote.

Plan

  • What moves: files, database, and DNS; email only if agreed in the scope
  • A rollback plan

Copy

  • Files and database copied to the new host
  • Server configuration, where in scope

Test

  • The site checked at the new location
  • SSL set up

Switch

  • DNS switched to the new host
  • Checks after the switch

Not included by default

  • Several websites, a platform or CMS change, or architecture changes. Custom quote.
  • Email migration, unless agreed in the scope
  • Ongoing maintenance or server management. Available as separate services.

  • You receive

    Migrated website

Your site working at the new host, with DNS and SSL in place, and a note of what was moved and changed.

  • We need from you

    Access

Access to the current hosting, the new hosting, the domain's DNS settings, and the website admin. You keep your own access to every account.

Price, timeline, and limits.

  • Price

Starting at $400 for a standard migration of one small website, paid upfront. Larger or more complex migrations get a custom quote.

  • Timeline

Timeline depends on project scope and requirements.

  • Downtime

The plan aims to keep downtime short, but no one can promise zero downtime. DNS changes take time to reach everyone.

  • Search

If URLs change, redirects for changed URLs reduce the risk to search traffic. No one can guarantee rankings will not change.

Questions before you order.

Will my site go down?

The plan aims to keep downtime short, with the switch planned in advance and a way back ready. No one can promise zero downtime.

Will I lose email?

Email depends on where it is hosted and on your DNS records. It is reviewed in the plan, and email migration can be added to the scope.

Will rankings change?

If URLs change, redirects for changed URLs reduce the risk to search traffic. No one can guarantee rankings.

My host offers free migration. Why pay?

For a simple site, a host's migration may be enough. Help is useful when email, DNS, a large database, a custom setup, or changed URLs are involved.

Can you move a whole server?

Moving a server from one VPS to another is part of VPS & server management.

We'll review your request and get back to you. Work starts after the scope and project terms are agreed in writing.
